How to edit text in a PDF (without Acrobat)
You can edit the actual text of a PDF in Chrome with Overtype: click a paragraph, type, and the words re-wrap in the document's own font. Nothing is uploaded — the file is opened, edited and exported on your own computer.
Most people reach for a PDF editor because one line is wrong: a date, a name, a price, a paragraph that needs rewording. Adobe Acrobat can do it, but it is a paid desktop application, and the free web editors ask you to upload a document that may be confidential.
Overtype takes the third route. It is a Chrome extension, so the PDF is opened by your own browser and edited there. It works on the real text objects in the file rather than pasting a picture of new text on top, which is why the result still looks like the original document rather than a patch job.
Step by step in Overtype
1. Open the PDF in Overtype
Install Overtype from the Chrome Web Store, open it, and choose the PDF from your computer. The file is read locally; it is never sent to a server.
2. Click the paragraph you want to change
Overtype recognises the text block and puts a cursor in it. Type, delete, or select and replace, exactly as you would in a text box.
3. Let the text re-wrap
As you type, the paragraph re-flows using the font the document already uses, so line breaks and spacing stay consistent with the rest of the page.
4. Tidy up anything that is not text
If part of the page needs to disappear rather than change, use whiteout to cover it or redaction to delete the characters outright. You can also drop in new text anywhere on the page.
5. Save the edited PDF
Export, and the finished file is saved straight to your computer through Chrome's normal download. Nothing leaves your machine at any point.
