How to fill out a PDF that isn't fillable
Click “Edit this PDF”, choose Add text, click the blank line and type. Overtype matches the nearby font and size, so a flat form fills in as if it had fields. If the form does have real fields, they simply work while viewing.
Plenty of forms are PDFs that were printed and re-scanned, or exported without any interactive fields. Printing, writing and re-scanning is the usual workaround, and it is a bad one.
Overtype lets you type straight onto the page. Text you add is drawn into the document in a font and size that matches its surroundings, so the finished form reads as a filled-in form rather than a scribbled-on picture.
Step by step in Overtype
1. Open the form and click “Edit this PDF”
The file is opened and processed on your own computer.
2. Choose “Add text”
This lets you place new text anywhere on the page instead of editing existing text.
3. Click the blank line and type
Your answer is placed on the line and matched to the nearby font and size, so it sits naturally with the printed labels.
4. Repeat for every field
Work down the form. You can drag any entry to line it up exactly.
5. Tick a checkbox, then Save
Use “Make fillable” to add a real checkbox and tick it, or draw a check with Shapes. Then save a new copy to your downloads.
Why this works on your device
If the form already has real interactive fields — text boxes, checkboxes, radio buttons, dropdowns — they work while you are simply viewing the PDF, with no edit mode needed, and the values are written into the document so any reader shows them. Either way, the form stays on your computer: Overtype does all of it inside Chrome, which matters for the tax, medical and HR forms people actually fill in.

- OCR is optional here, because you are adding new text rather than editing printed text. Run the built-in on-device OCR if you also need to change the words already printed on the page.
- Can I send it to someone else to fill in?
- Yes. “Make fillable” adds real form fields and checkboxes that any PDF reader can fill in, and you can flatten them afterwards so the entries cannot be changed.
