How to fix a typo in a PDF

Open the PDF in Chrome, click “Edit this PDF”, click the misspelled word and retype it. Overtype removes the original letters and redraws the new ones in the document's own font, so the line re-wraps and the page still looks untouched.

A single wrong letter in a finished PDF is a frustrating problem. The source file is gone, or it was never yours, and the free online editors solve it by dropping a text box on top of the page — wrong font, visible seam, and the misspelled word still sitting in the file underneath.

Overtype works on the text objects themselves. The old characters are taken out of the document and your replacement is drawn with the same font, size and spacing the paragraph already uses, so the fix is part of the page rather than a sticker on it.

Step by step in Overtype

  1. 1. Open the PDF

Open it in Chrome as you normally would, or drop the file into Overtype. The document is read on your own computer.

  2. 2. Click “Edit this PDF”

This switches the page from reading to editing. Overtype maps out the real text blocks on the page.

  3. 3. Click the misspelled word

A cursor appears inside the actual paragraph, not in a floating box laid over it.

  4. 4. Retype it

Delete the wrong letters and type the right ones. The paragraph re-wraps as you go, using the font already embedded in the document.

  5. 5. Press Cmd/Ctrl+Enter, then Save

That commits the edit. Saving writes a new copy to your downloads; the original file on disk is untouched.

Why this works on your device

Everything Overtype needs — the PDF parser, the font handling and the text layout engine — ships inside the extension and runs in your browser. Your document is never uploaded, so a contract or a payslip with one typo in it stays on your machine, and the fix works offline.

Questions

Does it keep the font?
Yes. Overtype uses the document's own embedded font whenever it can, and falls back to the closest bundled match when the file does not allow re-use of the original.
What if the PDF is a scan?
A scan is a picture of paper, so there is no text to edit yet. Run the built-in OCR first — it runs on your computer — and then edit the recognised text as normal.
Does the old text stay hidden in the file?
No. The original characters are removed from the document, not covered up, so they cannot be selected, copied or searched out afterwards.
