How to delete text from a PDF for real

Click “Edit this PDF”, click the paragraph and delete the words. Overtype removes the characters from the document itself and the remaining text re-flows, rather than painting a white box over them.

There are two very different things people call “deleting” text in a PDF. Whiteout draws a cover box over the words: the page looks clean, but the letters are still in the file and can be selected or copied. True deletion takes the characters out of the document.

Use whiteout when you are tidying a page visually. Use deletion when the sentence simply should not be there any more. Use redaction when the text must be provably gone — redaction removes the characters and then verifies they no longer appear anywhere in the file, including page properties and metadata.

Step by step in Overtype

  1. 1. Open the PDF and click “Edit this PDF”

The file is opened on your own computer and Overtype maps the real text blocks on the page.

  2. 2. Click into the paragraph

A cursor appears in the actual text, so you can select exactly the words you want gone.

  3. 3. Delete the words — or the whole paragraph

Select and delete as you would in any editor. Nothing is left behind under a cover box.

  4. 4. Let the text re-flow

The lines below close up in the document's own font, so there is no gap where the sentence used to be.

  5. 5. Save

A new copy is written to your downloads; the original file is untouched.

Why this works on your device

All of this happens inside Chrome. The PDF is parsed, rewritten and exported on your machine, so a document you are stripping a sentence out of never travels to a server — which matters most for exactly the documents you want to remove something from.

Questions

Does the deleted text remain in the file?
No. The characters are removed from the document's content, so they cannot be selected, copied or extracted afterwards.
Can I remove an entire paragraph?
Yes. Select the whole block and delete it; the surrounding text re-flows to fill the space.
What about a line inside a scanned page?
A scan has no text layer. Run the built-in OCR first and then delete the recognised text, or cover the area with whiteout — use redaction if it must be provably gone.
