Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 9, 2026

Overtype is a browser extension that edits PDF files entirely on your own device. This policy explains exactly what the extension does and does not do with your data. In short: your documents never leave your machine, and we collect nothing.

What we collect

Nothing. Overtype has no analytics, no telemetry, no accounts, and makes no network requests during editing. We receive no information about you, your files, or your usage.

How your files are handled

PDFs you open are read and edited locally, in your browser. They are never uploaded, transmitted, or sent to us or any third party. All processing (text extraction, editing, whiteout, redaction, form fields, export) happens on your device. When you export, the edited PDF is saved directly to your computer through your browser's normal save mechanism.

Local storage on your device

Everything the extension stores stays inside your browser's storage for the extension. It is never sent anywhere. Specifically:

  1. A monthly export counter used to enforce the free tier's monthly limit, containing no document data.
  2. Your license key if you purchase Pro, a signed token verified on your device that contains only your order identifier.
  3. Your working copy, the current state of the open PDF, kept so a closed tab or crash does not lose your edits, removed when you save or discard.
  4. Recent files (optional), copies of PDFs you opened recently with a small thumbnail so you can reopen them; you can switch this off, which deletes what is stored, and remove entries at any time.

Permissions

storage — the items above.

declarativeNetRequest — only used by the optional auto-open feature and does nothing unless you enable it.

Optional access to websites — if you click "Enable auto-open", the extension asks Chrome for permission to act on all sites, and with that granted, navigating to a .pdf link opens the file in Overtype instead of the browser's viewer by redirecting the navigation to its own page, which then downloads that one PDF exactly as the browser would have. The extension does not read, record, or transmit anything else about your browsing, and you can revoke the permission at any time from chrome://extensions. Without this feature enabled, the extension makes no network requests at all.

Payments

If you upgrade, payment is handled entirely by Stripe. We never see or store your full payment details. After purchase you receive a license key to activate Pro; activation happens offline in the extension. See https://stripe.com/privacy for how Stripe handles payment information.

Children's privacy

Overtype is not directed to children and collects no personal information from anyone.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this URL with a new "Last updated" date.
